Sahjeevan: A Journey of Partnership and Preservation in Kutch

The Sahjeevan Project, named after the Hindi word for “symbiotic association,” stands as a testament to the beautiful collaboration between designer and maker. This initiative, led by Bowstring Handmade, seeks to nurture and empower artisans by creating an ecosystem where creative vision and craftsmanship thrive side by side, each elevating the other. In 2023, we embarked on the first pilot of this project in Mundra, Kutch, with an extraordinary artist and 6th-generation master craftsman: Shakil Ahmed.

Shakil Ahmed’s expertise is rooted in the intricate craft of handblock batik printing, a tradition his family has upheld for over six generations. Over the past 15 years, Shakil’s dedication has turned him into a master of natural dyeing in batik—a skill that took sincere and tireless experimentation to perfect. He brings not only skill but also passion and heritage to the table, and together, we recognized an opportunity to transform his ancestral business by expanding its reach to the alternative and modern market, while honoring the craft’s origins.

Our collaboration began with a small collection, focusing on pieces that blended traditional techniques with modern functionality. The first line included kaftans—both short and long—along with tote bags, toiletry kits, and cushion covers. Each item was crafted with the same meticulous detail that Shakil’s family has practiced for centuries, but designed with an end user in mind. As demand and excitement grew, so did our vision. We expanded to include one-piece dresses, bathrobes, shirts, and even journals, all using Shakil’s masterful handblock batik technique.

For Shakil, this journey is more than just expanding his range of products. It is about establishing a signature presence for his craft, one that respects its deep-rooted legacy but also speaks to a new, conscious audience. We wanted to build not just products, but a brand. To this end, Bowstring Handmade has worked to provide comprehensive design and development services, as well as essential branding support: adding tags, care instructions, and the story behind each product. Every piece that leaves Shakil’s workshop now carries his legacy with it, a symbol of the rich heritage of Kutch and the dedication behind each creation.

The Sahjeevan project is more than a commercial endeavor. It’s a conscious effort to foster transparency and ethics at every stage. Our approach has been to develop in a way that’s truly sustainable—empowering artisans like Shakil to gain recognition, preserve their heritage, and connect directly with a market that values authenticity and tradition.

My vision for Shakil and other artisans like him is grand but deeply rooted: to see them grow into signature brands of handblock batik and natural dye products, reaching far beyond Kutch, yet holding onto the essence of their craft. This journey is about more than just products; it’s about honor, legacy, and growth. The Sahjeevan project invites others to not only witness this transformation but to be a part of it, supporting the beautiful and enduring tradition of handcrafting that has woven its way through generations.
