Sahjeevan Project II: Weaving Tradition into New Horizons with Ramesh Mangariya

In the vibrant heart of Kutch, where tradition is as deep-rooted as the desert sands, the Sahjeevan Project continues its journey of honoring and evolving artisan craftsmanship. The second pilot of this initiative brought us to the loom of Ramesh Mangariya, a 6th-generation master craftsman specializing in extra-weft handloom weaving. Ramesh and his family have dedicated themselves to a craft that has been lovingly passed down through generations, working with locally grown Kala Cotton and indigenous wool, or desi oon, both organically cultivated and cherished in Kutch.

The Mangariya family’s legacy is woven into the very threads of Kutch’s history. For years, they’ve developed unstitched fabrics—sarees, dupattas, stoles, throws, shawls, and suit sets—for resellers and retailers, carrying forward the legacy of their ancestors with pride and a quiet resilience. Yet, within this continuity lies an openness, a desire to expand thoughtfully, honoring tradition while embracing new ideas to make their mark in a modern world.

My collaboration with Ramesh and his family was driven by a shared dream: to explore the versatility of their rich, handwoven fabrics and the potential to see their craft transcend into new spaces and applications. Together, we focused on a unique challenge: increasing the thickness of the fabric using the same yarn, making it suitable for home furnishings. This transformation required a delicate balance—the goal was to retain the beautiful character of Kala Cotton while enhancing the durability and weight for home use.

The result was extraordinary. The colors, weaving patterns, and textures became alive with a new purpose. We developed a minimalistic yet vibrant collection of home decor pieces: cushions with eye-catching color variations, tote bags, toiletry kits, and journals—all crafted with the refined skill of generations. Each piece retained the distinct elegance of Kutch’s textile tradition but felt fresh and full of life, expanding the legacy of extra-weft weaving into an exciting future.

The project’s impact was profound not just for the products but for the people behind them. For Ramesh, his family, and their community, the process was as invigorating as it was inspiring. Seeing their traditional craft evolve into something entirely new brought a sense of joy, pride, and motivation to envision even broader possibilities. The community gathered, touched and delighted, to see how their cherished craft could serve modern purposes, providing both livelihood and a lasting legacy.

The Sahjeevan Project II is more than just a collaboration—it’s a celebration of Kutch’s heritage, a fusion of age-old skill with forward-thinking creativity. It reminds us all that the power of tradition lies in its adaptability, and with every new application, the art grows richer. This partnership has reinforced our commitment at Bowstring Handmade to not only support artisans but to bring their craft into the future with purpose, authenticity, and respect for the legacy they carry.

Through Sahjeevan, we invite others to appreciate the spirit and resilience of artisans like Ramesh, who, with open minds and open hearts, weave stories that connect generations, creating pieces that enrich not just homes but lives.
